Despite the best efforts of our law makers and moral leaders, discrimination based on race and disability are still too common an occurrence in restaurants across America. Unfortunately, the positive impact of Denny’s trailblazing effort in corp rate diversity programmes and the strengthening of existing laws, like the ADA, are out weighed every time discrimi- nation occurs in a restaurant. Obviously the Denny’s experience was not enough to convince all restaurateurs of the impor- tance of the proper treatment of all customers. The recent large lawsuits against the Cracker Barrel and the Waffle House are proof of this. The only ways to eliminate discrimination are to continue educating our children about diversity, in sisting on strengthening corporate diversity programmes, and increasing the penalties for those organisations who do discriminate.
