Although basal Angiosperms are phylogenetically distant from
core Eudicots where the PLENA and the euAGAMOUS lineages
occur, the behavior of the two Magnolia AGAMOUS genes
during sarcotesta development is reminiscent of that of the two
AGAMOUS lineages of core Eudicots. It would be interesting to
ascertain whether and perhaps which of the two AGAMOUS
genes found in both the basal Angiosperm M. grandiflora and
some of the ANITA species gave rise to the two lineages now
found in core Eudicots.
