Most mistakes occur in the preanalytical phase and
not in the analytical phase, as many clients believe [9,
10]. The preanalytical phase is very vulnerable to uncertainties
[10, 11]. Around 62% of the ‘laboratory’ mistakes
are made during the preanalytical phase, followed by the
postanalytical phase (23%) and the analytical phase [15%
(one point for the low amount of mistakes in the analytical
phase is the high standardized automation and the LIS
support)] [2]. Based on this data a future LIS should not
only manage and concentrate on the classic three analytical
phases (pre-, analytical, and postanalytical phase). It
is necessary to establish two new phases within the classical
three phases to reduce the error rate which are termed
pre- and postanalytical management.
