Tick, tick, tick. It's amazing how time flies when you are not paying attention to it or have a neurodevelopmental profile that makes it difficult to gauge time's passing. For many people, Parkinson's (1957) law, "Work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion," defines their daily experience because they rarely feel they have the time to get things done. The capacity to manage time is among the most essential of the metacognitive executive functions; it is very much related to goal setting, planning skills, and anxiety/ stress management (Misra & McKean, 2000). To complete tasks in a timely manner (e.g., reading a book for class, writing a term paper), one must gauge with reasonable accuracy how long the task will take and then set aside the time to get it done.
