Analysis of cost/benefit for quick fire blight testingWe have used the cost estimates of testing fire blight samplesfrom the Plant Disease Diagnostic Clinic at Cornell Universityand two Tree Fruit Pathology research labs at CornellUniversity and compared it with the rapid fire blight diagnosticmethods tested here. The Plant Disease Diagnostic Clinic atCornell University culture and test fire blight samples fromNYS growers at $35 per sample, and it takes about a week toprovide results after receiving the samples (Table 3;Supporting File S2). Similarly, Tree Fruit Pathology labs atCornell AgriTech and Hudson Valley Research Lab (HVRL)also culture and test fire blight samples. However, unlike commerciallabs, the availability of testing depends on staff availabilityand funding. These research labs generally do notcharge growers for lab testing of fire blight due to supportby grants.
