Otherwise, exchange will remain on the surface con- tact level (Levinger & Snoek, 1972) and be driven by the immediate expectation of need fulfillment rather than close continuous association. Hence, this type of altruistic willingness to reward exchange partners with “no strings attached” forms a core foundation for attraction in close ties (Tedeschi & Lindskold, 1976; Thibaut & Kelley, 1959).
