Sound vs Position. There’s an important intonation principle to consider when learning the new notes, F♮ and B♭. Although it seems rather obvious, it is better to teach students to listen critically to the sound of a new note rather than to focus primarily on the position of the finger. If a student is instructed to play F♮ with a ‘low’ 1st finger, the idea of finger position dominates their playing, instead of pitch accuracy – i.e. good intonation. A subtle distinction perhaps, but an error that I have seen (heard, actually) too often. Of course, 1st finger must move back to the correct place, without changing left hand’s basic set, but as we know – as with leading tones and other intervals – the precise pitches of F♮ and B♭ rely on musical context, i.e. how they function in the key and in the melody.
