The anthropological perspective offers at least five key dimensions to international studies. First, anthropology emphasizes the importance of culture in explaining human actions at every level of society, from the interpersonal to the international. The concept of culture reminds us that people’s symbolic worlds are just as real as the material conditions in which they live; in fact, people only apprehend the empirical world through learned models of reality. While all peoples may respond to economic pressure and military power, we cannot begin to make accurate predictions about how they will respond unless we have a thorough understanding of their cultural realities.
