London (Reuter) - Britain’s Health Secretary Virginia Bottomley said recently a form of meningitis, which kills about 70 young children a year in Britain, may be eradicated as the result of a dramatic British vaccine breakthrough. There has been a 70 per cent fall in cases of HIB meningitis in babies under a year old in the fist three months of the new vaccination programme. At the same time there was a fall of about 60 per cent in infections across all other age groups of children under four. Bottomley said, "Recently we had 13,000 to 14,000 hospital admissions a year. 70 deaths a year, and many cases of handicap in children as a result of HIB meningitis. "Now we are well on the way to eliminate it. The director of the National Meningitis Trust, Helen Butery, hailed the findings as "fantastic news". But she warned, "HIB" is only one form of meningitis.
