If no relationship is found between the choice of R&D accounting method and future performance (as captured by future sales growth, future earnings, stock prices or market returns), this will suggest that managers have inappropriately capitalized R&D expenditures, either because they have opted for capitalization in order to manage earnings, or because their estimation of the ex ante success rate of
the firm’s R&D investments turns out to be inaccurate.
