My first week of teaching was a rollercoaster full of emotions, lesson planning, and celebrations. Meeting the students of my first school was very exciting because I was told they had been asking about me for weeks at this point. The curious faces peering through the windows of the office were extremely welcoming. All day long I heard children yelling “hello”, “goodbye”, and “I love teacher Maria” at random moments. My first class consisted of basic greetings and asking about one’s emotional state. Some of the children were very shy about speaking English so after practicing with a partner I had the students role play in front of the classroom wearing simple costumes. The costumes really helped the children get excited about greeting their partner. Throughout the week I implemented different variations of Teacher Maria Says, Hot Potato with phrases, and Four Corners. The students took well to this and I have decided to introduce the material through an activity and then review the material at the end.
