For this assignment you will work with a partner and conduct an interview for the class. Please
choose your own partner.
As in the example videos, interviews should begin with the person asking questions introducing him
or herself, followed by a short introduction of person who will be answering questions.
The person answering questions may answer as him/herself, or pretend to be someone else. For
example, perhaps someone pretends to be Miley Cyrus. The person asking questions might then
begin: "Hello, I'm Barbara Walters, and I'm here with pop sensation Miley Cyrus. Welcome, Miley.
How are you today?"
For about 3 minutes (+/- 15 seconds), ask your partner questions. You may hold notes with your
questions on them while you are asking, but note that more points will be awarded if you can
work without notes. When asking a person questions, you should maintain eye contact. A-grades
for this assignment will be given to those who have the most natural, smooth, and conversational
style.
It does not matter how many questions you ask. Some questions result in short answers (e.g.
"What is your favorite color?") and some in long answers ("Can you tell us why you chose
International Business China for your university concentration?").
The person answering questions (the "guest") may not hold notes. If you are answering
questions, you should listen carefully to your partner.
After you are done asking questions, you will switch roles with your partner. You will now answer
questions.
More points and higher grades will be given to students who achieve a more natural and unscripted
feel to their interview. This means that a student answering questions will listen carefully and
answer appropriately, as if in conversation, and not merely reciting a memorized speech.
Additionally, the most points will be given to students who give unexpected answers, and
interviewers who ask questions based on the answers that are given.
Although this is a graded assignment, please, try to have fun! As you will see in the rubric on the
following page, a significant portion of the grade will depend on things like creativity, spontaneity,
and improvisation
