a ‘crystallite’
represents a domain with fairly well ordered polymer
chains. Hence, the reduction in the crystallite size is suggestive
of breaking up of larger protein domains into smaller ones due to
the action of UV irradiation, for e.g., on the peptide backbone.
The increase in lattice strain signals that these smaller domains
are in a strained condition by a possible cross-linking within the
domains as revealed by PALS and DSC measurements.
