The UK has committed in excess of £200m to tackle deforestation in poor countries, under plans to stem the loss of forests that are being destroyed at a rate of eight football fields every ten seconds.
The Government announced the cash as it signed a major UN declaration to try to tackle climate change by halving the rate of deforestation globally by 2020 and stamping it out entirely by 2030.
The New York Declaration on Forests, which was signed by more than 30 countries and 40 major companies, was unveiled at an international climate change summit convened by UN secretary general Ban Ki-moon.
But doubts were immediately raised about its effectiveness, with Brazil not among the signatories and no legally-binding commitments.
Deforestation accounts for almost fifth of global greenhouse gas emissions as trees, which store carbon, release it when they are burned during forest clearances.
