Legumes containing condensed tannin (e.g., Lotus corniculatus) are able to lower methane (g kg-1 DM intake) by 12-15% mainly through a direct toxic effect on methanogens (Beauchemin et al., 2008; Rowlinson et al., 2008). The CT in Lotus corniculatus reduced methane kg-1 DMI by 13% and cows fed Lotus corniculatus produced 32% less methane kg-1 milk solids compared to those fed good quality ryegrass. It was reported that extracts from Acacia mearnsii with 61.5% CTreduced CH4 emissions in sheep by 12% per kilogram of feed intake (Carulla et al., 2005).
