Set short- term goals, and build in rewards if the student meets pre-set requirements. For instance, develop a contract with a student that may read like this: If you do X amount of work you will earn a grade of Y, or if you do X amount of work, you will receive(insert an agreed-upon reward).If the student needs more immediate feedback, assign a certain amount of work to complete before the end of the class hour, and then collect it as the student leaves the room. If the student meets the pre-set requirement, make arrangements with the student to pick up his or her reward later in the day.
