The main effects of neutrophil (P = 0.111) and
lymphocyte (P = 0.126) concentrations did not differ
among treatments (Figure 1). On d 27, neutrophils in
the 14D pigs tended to be greater (P = 0.097) than for
the 28D pigs. On d 35, neutrophil concentrations for
Stress and adaptive immune system in pigs 651
the 21D pigs tended to be greater (P = 0.062) than
for the 14D pigs and were greater (P = 0.039) than for
the 28D pigs. Weaning was followed immediately by a
transient reduction in lymphocyte concentrations. For
example, there was a treatment effect of weaning on d
15 (P = 0.074) and on d 29 (P = 0.014), when lymphocyte
concentrations were less in the 28D pigs than
in the 14D pigs (P = 0.019) and the 21D pigs (P =
0.042). Few differences were apparent in the neutrophilto-
lymphocyte ratios, with the exceptions of a tendency
to differ (P < 0.1) at d 20 and 35 (Table 3).
