Instructional self-talk has been found to be beneficial for tennis players’ volleying (Landin & Hebert, 1999) and ground stroke skills (Ziegler, 1897), as well as for 100 m sprinting (Mallett & Hanrahan, 1997).
Skills that required refined movements, such as shoot in basketball self-talk of technical instruction had better results.
While with skills requiring strength, motivational self-talk was more effective (Hatzigeorgiadis,Theodorakis & Zourbanos, 2004).
Perkos et al. (2002) examined the effectiveness of a self-talk intervention
program on basketball skills.
The results revealed that instructional self-talk was effective for a dribbling and a passing test, but not for a shooting test.
The researchers attributed the lack of effect for the shooting to the complexity of the task, and the suitability of the selected cues related to the task.
