Studies of biological and environmental
adaptations allow us to place negritos in their environments (Bernstein and Dominy
this issue; Bulbeck this issue; Venkataraman et al. this issue) while developing
more fine-grained understandings of convergent evolution and human diversity
(Bulbeck this issue; Migliano this issue). As the picture of diversity becomes clearer,
it becomes harder to specify what we mean by negrito or negrito populations—in
specifying the science, we lose the definition. Perhaps it is time to put this hoary
term to rest (Dentan 1981).1
