Post-Field Analysis
After the data collection is complete, a period which may take many months,
accepted wisdom suggests that you rest and distance yourself from the situation.
When you return, you will have a fresh perspective and be mentally prepared to
tackle the post-field analysis. Your goal now is to produce findings; to do this you
must first find your focus then get organized. It’s just like moving into a new
apartment, you arrive with a bunch of boxes and must decide what goes where
and why!
In other words, you have to take the mass of raw data and make sense of it
within the themes, patterns or categories you identified in the field analysis. It is
perfectly normal if these groupings change, for the mere act of describing data
often brings new insights and thoughts about your data. This is the time of
illumination and explication. Analyzing the content comes next. Whether you
choose to analyze the content using typologies (groupings based on similar
characteristics), structural analysis (e.g. searching for patterns), logical analysis (e.g.
cross classification matrices) to name a few, this is a time of creative synthesis.
Once you are comfortable with your discoveries, it is time to look back at your
data for negative cases (cases which go against what you have found). You will
also want to reflect on the lessons learned along the way that can be shared with
the research community and sponsoring organization. Finally, you will want to
start planning your final written product (Chapter 7).
