Case history 2 Mrs Bishop is a slightly anxious 25 year old mother of two whose older brother has recently been diagnosed as suffering Type 2 diabetes Mrs Bishop has read that diabetes runs in families and decides to test her urine for the presence of glucose, using her brother's urine test strips. A positive result convinces her that, although she feels well, she has diabetes. She goes to see her GP, who takes blood for glucose estimation. The random blood glucose result is well within the reference range at 6.2 mmol/L but, despite attempts at reassurance, Mrs Bishop remains convinced she has diabetes. Her concern is fuelled by two subsequent urine tests that are also posi- tive for glucose. Her GP suggests a glucose tolerance test. The results of this were: fasting plasma glucose 4.8 mmol/L and plasma glucose, 2 hours after ingesting 75g glucose, 7.5 mmol/L.
