Rogers believed that people have one overriding motivation, with which we come equipped at birth that is, a tendency to actualize, to develop all of our abilities and potentialities, from the strictly biological to the most sophisticated psychological aspects of our being. The ultimate goal is the actualization of the self, concept of central importance in Rogers's system. To maintain and enhance the self, to become a fully functioning person, is the goal toward which all of a person's being is directed.
