This study represents a subcomponent of a larger study investigating
risk factors for adverse safety outcomes (e.g., self-harm,
violence) among civil psychiatric patients discharged to the community.
The study was approved by university and regional health
authority ethical review boards. To be eligible to participate, patients
had to be at least 18 years of age; meet DSM IV-TR criteria for a major
mental illness, speak English fluently; preparing for imminent
hospital discharge; and willing and capable of providing informed
consent to the study.
