SMJ welcomes papers that focus on theoretical
contributions, empirical contributions (quantitative
and/or qualitative), or combinations of these. The
“Editorial Policy” statement on the SMJ website
reflects this goal. The purpose of this editorial is
to add clarity to what “theory” means in SMJ. It is
intended to be useful to SMJ editors, referees, and
potential authors. Our hope is that other scholars
may also find it useful. In general where the word
“theory” occurs in what follows it can be read as
“theory in SMJ.” The editorial does not seek to
engage in a philosophical analysis/debate of the
nature and role of theory in science.
