The Spider-Trickster Dose Mathematics
Anansi, the forty-foot-tall sculpture shown in photograph 1, was created by Henry Rollins (b.1937) for the 1974 exhibition Public Sculpture/Urban Environment. The late 1960s and early 1970s were a period When African Americans were rediscovering their African roots, and the sculpture, Which depicts a character in West African folklore who is a spider and a trickster, is full of meaning for them. (Br’er Rabbit is an Americanized version of Anansi.) The sculpture, located across the street from the Oakland Museum of California, is considered part of the museum’s collection.
