Assuming that microalgae growing in ponds situated in the locality of these oil refineries are tolerant to the environmental conditions prevalent in these areas, any process that is developed using these local strains will be independent of outside strain suppliers and such species or strains would be well adapted to the particular cultivation conditions present in the vicinity of the refinery plant. Hence, we screened and isolated an alga from a refinery wastewater pond, which showed a combination of high-temperature, high-light, and high-CO2 tolerance.
