Everfest's Take
As legend has it, Cascamorras is a festival that originated from a dispute between two towns over a coveted statue of the Virgin Mary. Baza, the statue’s home, challenged Guadix to try and make it to the church without being paint-splattered by any of the townspeople to win the statue. In today’s celebration, the cascamorras (buffoon) attempts to steal the statue while thousands of locals try to splatter him with black greasepaint.
