Twenty-six participants completed the study. The mean age
was 84.8 years with a standard deviation of 5.0 years. Eighty-five
percent of the subjects reported being right hand dominant,
12% ambidextrous, and 4% left hand dominant. All the subjects
reported difficulty in opening jars or bottles with twist-off lids
and 88% used their right hand to open them. All subjects had
documented hand pain of 2/10 or more (mean ¼ 3.85,
SD ¼ 0.89). Eighty percent reported hand pain in the past month
and only 12% reported receiving treatment for arthritis. All the
subjects lived independently and were able to follow verbal
instructions.
