A systematic review of 33 studies of t'ai chi was published in the British Journal of Sports Sciences in 2015.[31] The authors noted improvements in posture, balance and strength, and concluded that: "The results demonstrated a favorable effect or tendency of Tai Chi to improve physical performance and showed that this type of exercise could be performed by individuals with different chronic conditions, including COPD (Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), HF (heart failure), and OA (osteoarthritis).” In most of the studies, patients practiced t'ai chi two or three times a week for an hour, for a period of 12 weeks. A 2011 overview of existing research on t'ai chi ch'uan's health effects found evidence of medical benefit for preventing falls, mental health, and general health in elderly people. There wasn't conclusive evidence for any of the other conditions researched, including Parkinson's disease, diabetes, cancer and arthritis.[32]
The practice of t'ai chi ch'uan is encouraged by the National Parkinson Foundation and Diabetes Australia.
