Meeting patient needs in a timely and efficient manner is the goal for all ED providers. Through the initiatives mentioned earlier, our ED experienced a 17% reduction in median length of stay and decreased door-to-doctor time by 73% (Table 1). The number of patients who LWBS dropped from 2% to 0.65% and shortened the time from disposition to transfer for admitted patients by 15% (Table 1). This was achieved during a period of 7% growth and, as needed, occurred without increasing the size of the ED, with only a 1% growth in costs. Essentially, after implementation of the improvement and management systems, patients are seeing a provider earlier, treatment efficiencies are improved, and idle times in the ED are minimized.
