Improvement Concept 2: Rapid Process Improvement
Workshops
A rapid process improvement workshop (RPIW) consists
of a multidisciplinary team of frontline staff and
physicians aimed at analyzing and improving common
yet complex processes.6 The traditional name for
an RPIW is a ‘‘Kaizen event’’ and typically takes place
over the course of several days (4-5 days). Educational
content is provided for participants to aid in building
their capacity to problem solve in their particular roles.
The ultimate goal is to develop and test new ideas
during the workshop that could be adopted to create
more reliable and efficient patient care processes. At
the end of the RPIW, the team reports out to the organization
the outcomes obtained through their improvement
initiatives.
