Skin
The skin consists of a mucus layer, epidermis,
and dermis. Epidermal layers contain numerous
types of cells including taste cells, alarm cells,
pigment cells, and mucus-producing cells. In
addition to other functions, mucus acts as amas tree" (three-dimensional) structure. Because
the epithelium on secondary lamellae is
one cell thick and the surface area of the gills is
large, gill compromise is a constant threat.
