Experiments were conducted using a single cylinder SI engine with identical cylinder geometry to a 2000 Ford Mustang Cobra V8. The general specifications of this engine are given in Table 2. The engine was coupled with a GE type TLC-15 class 4-35-1700 dynamometer capable of absorbing a maximum load of 26 kW at a speed of 4500 rpm (see Fig. 1). A DYN-LOC IV controller and a DyneSystems DTC-1 controller were used to control the dynamometer and throttle position, respectively. The engine was controlled by a Megasquirt V3.0 engine control unit, which allowed the adjustment of the fuel injection and spark timing.
