Implications for research
There is a need to study a broader group of US expatriates in Taiwan. This will add
validity and expand generalizability of these findings. Future research should expand
the questionnaire used to include the items that surfaced in this study in response to
the open-ended questions. To reduce the response bias that might exist in the current
study, future research needs to compare the occupational and positional differences
between US expatriates and their Taiwanese colleagues. Second, a model for Taiwan
culture training should be developed and its effectiveness should be evaluated. Future
studies can focus on the development and refinement of the model.
Taiwan’s business culture is significantly different from that in the USA. Although
there has been a close economic relationship between Taiwan and the USA, limited
research has addressed intercultural training needs for expatriates in Taiwan. A study
in this area can help human resource practitioners in developing expatriate training
programs. Research results can contribute to the knowledge base of expatriate training
