Of course, the final goal is to help develop scientific literacy in our school students. The
examples here were derived from genetics, but can easily be adapted to any science
discipline whose advancement has created personal or social issues. Armed with subject
matter knowledge, knowledge of NOS, and knowledge of SI students are able to make
more informed decisions with respect to scientifically-based issues as well as to recognize
the nature of those issues they may be confronted with. This is the sine qua non of what it
means to be scientifically literate.
