In vivo antifungal assay of AG and CH
The effect of AG and CH alone and in combination on growth of
C. musaewas evaluated on banana fruit. Forin vivostudies, banana
were washed with sodium hypochlorite (0.05%), rinsed with purified water and air-dried at room temperature (25
C). The banana
were then dipped for 2e3 min in spore suspension ofC. musae(1
10
5
spores ml
1
) and kept at room temperature for complete
drying. Air-dried fruit were dipped for 2e3 min in AG at 5, 10, 15 or
20% and 1.0% CH alone and in combination, and then kept at
ambient for drying. After treatment, the fruit were packed in
cardboard corrugated boxes and stored (131
C, 803% RH) for
28 days and then for 5 days at simulated marketing conditions
(25
C, 60% RH). The effect of AG and CH treatments alone and AG
incorporated with CH on disease incidence and disease severity
was evaluated weekly for 28 days during cold storage and then for 5
days at simulated marketing conditions. Disease incidence data was
expressed as the percentage of fruit showing anthracnose out of the
total number of fruit in each treatment, while disease severity was
scored following the scale (1 ¼0% of fruit surface rotten; 2¼
1e25%; 3¼26e50%; 4¼51e75% and 5¼76e100%) (Sivakumar
et al., 2002) and quality was evaluated as percentage weight loss,
firmness, soluble solids concentration (SSC) and titratable acidity.
