4.2. Effect of vermicompost on tomato quality under different soil
water regimes
Tomato quality was influenced by fertilization and irrigation
level in this study. The sugar/acid ratio in VM was higher compared
with the other fertilizer treatments under 50–60%f. VM
increased VC content when compared to the other fertilizer treatments
under 60-70%f. Similar results are also noted by some
previous studies. Zhang et al. (2011) found that proper addition
of vermicompost increases the contents of fructose, glucose,
sucrose, VC, lycopene, and soluble protein, but excessive addition
of vermicompost decreases the fruit quality. In a certain range,
the increasing amount of vermicompost improved the quality of
tomato (Edwards and Burrows, 1988; Lv and Ma, 2005). Premizic
(1998) found that vermicompost increases the vitamin contents of
tomato. Wei et al. (2009) reported that the treatment with medium
water level and high fertilization (70–80%f, N 600 kg/ha and P2O5
420 kg/ha) increases the contents of yield, VC and soluble protein
in tomato.
