Antimony oxide is used because of the fire retardancy it imparts. Because it will cause a whitening effect and loss of transparency, it must also be considered a white pigment. Where transparency is required, antimony pentoxide rather than the more common and lower-cost trioxide is used. The pentoxide is supplied as submicron particles. Recently, nanoparticle antimony trioxide has been introduced as fire retardant.
