7. Pollution
Pollution refers to the introduction of contaminants into the natural environment that causes
adverse change. Pollution may be chemical or energy (such as noise, heat or light). Many chemical
pollutants contribute to ozone depletion. In turn, rising temperatures associated with climate
change are likely to make pollution worse, for example, by increasing the frequency and intensity of
air pollution. Smog forms when pollution from vehicles, factories, and other sources reacts with
sunlight and heat. Increasing temperatures will speed this process.
Describe a pollution problem in your country and how it has affected natural ecosystems and
biodiversity. What would be some long term management challenges for your country to mitigate
the environmental impact from these pollution events?
Choose one:
• Air pollution
• Oil spills
• Organic waste from farming or food industry
