In this study, an active filler (waste oyster shells from
the nearby sea) system for combined wastewater treatment
at an estuary has been used to treat tidal river water. The
objectives of this study are: (1) to analyse the influence of
a bio-contact oxidation tank filling an active filler system
(waste oyster shell) on treatment of high salinity water
from a tidal river; (2) to determine the biodegradation
efficiency from this active filler system in a long-duration
experiment; and (3) to apply this active filler technology in
practice.
