Thailand introduces first law to protect LGBT people
The Thai government passed the 2015 Gender Equality Act in March and it is being implemented this week. The law aims to protect LGBT people from discrimination and is the first of its kind in Thailand.
Those who break the law may have to pay up to 20,000 baht in fines and could face up to six months in prison.
The law protects people from unfair discrimination among the sexes and this is defined as any action that “segregates, obstructs or limits the rights” of a person because they have “a sexual expression different from that person’s original sex.”
Effectively, this new law will protect transgender individuals from discrimination in Thailand. The law also prevents those government agencies, private organisations and people in Thailand from developing anti-LGBT policies, rules and regulations.
