Box I — Shwedagon Pagoda Shwedagon Pagoda towers above Yangon. Thought to be built around 59 B.C., it is more than 100 meters tall and is covered entirely in pure gold. The top most hti or Holy Umbrella is hung with hundreds of small golden bells and precious gemstones. The gold-covered pagoda is a stunning sight, changing color with the ever-shifting sunlight. Sunrise and sunset are two of the most beautiful times to view the pagoda as the low, warm light bathes the gold. Tourists visiting Shwedagon can not only view the architectural wonder of the pagoda and its beauty but also witness Myanmar culture as local pilgrims and tourists from across the country come to the pagoda to worship. Even at night, the pagoda is awash in light and abuzz with activity. Legend states that Shwedagon houses Holy Relics of the four previous Buddha that had gained Enlightenment in this world. The Holy Hairs of Lord Gauttama Buddha, who was the last of the four Buddha, are also said to be buried inside.
