One of Thailand’s most famous yearly festivals is the Yi Peng in Chiang Mai, it is celebrated along with Loi Krathong where lotus shaped candle lanterns are released on water in the hope of fulfilling wishes for the upcoming year. Yi Peng varies from the water based candle lanterns to candles that are released into the sky at night, creating a spectacular visual display of lights, as you release your lantern you are expected to make a wish that will come true according to Thai customs.
Yi Peng is the process of paying homage and showing respect to Buddha, the exact date of the event is held in secret and is only announced shortly before the festival. Yi Peng is held twice throughout the year and is certainly not to be missed.
