Part II describes in some detail four systems of production: (1) intensive or vealer production, prefaced by a succinct account of growth; (2) semi-intensive production, which is concerned with yearling cattle slaughtered at 12-16 months at weights of 295-408 kg and steers up to 31/2 years in the weight range 408-544 kg; (3) extensive production, concerned mainly with castrates aged over 31/2 years and culled cows; and (4) special purpose production, such as that now being developed on irrigated land (e.g. the Ord irrigation scheme), and lot feeding. It is pointed out that from both the economic and biological viewpoints, both of the last-named methods are difficult to justify in Australia.Part III is by far the longest and most detailed section. It comprises six chapters, one for each State, and it ranges widely over the different conditions and problems in each area or region.
