พระพุทธชินราชเป็นพระพุทธรูป ปางมารวิชัย ที่มีลักษณะงดงาม ที่สุดในโลก
มีขนาดหน้าตักกว้าง ห้าศอก 1 คืบ ห้านิ้ว(2.875 เมตร) สูงเจ็ดศอก(3.5 เมตร) หล่อ
ด้วยทองสัมฤทธิ์ขัดเงาเกลี้ยง สมเด็จพระเอกาทศรถได้ทรงปิดทองเป็นครั้งแรกเมื่อ
พ.ศ.2146และเมื่อ พ.ศ.2478 ได้มีการลงรักปิดทองเต็มองค์อีกครั้งหนึ่ง และเป็นการ
ถาวร อยู่จนทุกวันนี้

พระพุทธชินราช เป็นพระพุทธรูปศิลปสุโขทัย ที่มีลักษณะเด่นเป็นพิเศษ ต่างไปจาก
พระพุทธรูปศิลปะสุโขทัย แบบอื่น ๆ อย่างชัดเจน เป็นพระพุทธรูปศิลปะสมัยสุโขทัยหมวดพิเศษ คือ พระพุทธชินราช ตามตำนาน การสร้างพระพุทธชินราช พระมหาธรรมราชาที่ 1 (พญาลิไทย) รัชกาลที่ 5 แห่งราชวงศ์ ได้โปรดให้สร้างขึ้นเมื่อ พ.ศ.1900 พระพุทธรูป ที่สร้างขึ้นในคราวเดียวกันนั้น มี 3 องค์ คือ
1. พระพุทธชินราช หน้าตักกว้าง ห้าศอกคืบห้านิ้ว ณ วิหารใหญ่ทิศตะวันตก

ในการหล่อพระพุทธรูป เมื่อหล่อเสร็จแล้วยังมีทองเหลืออยู่ จึงเอามารวมกัน
หล่อเป็นพระพุทธรูป นั่งขัดสมาธิปางมารวิชัย หน้าตักกว้าง หนึ่งศอกเศษ เรียกพระนามว่า
พระเหลือกับพระสาวเป็นพระยืนอีก 2 องค์ และอิษฐที่ก่อเตาหลอมทองและสุ่มหุ่น
ในการหล่อพระได้เอามารวมกันก่อเป็นชุกชี สูงสามศอก ตรงตำแหน่งที่หล่อพระพุทธชิน
ราชและปลูกต้นมหาโพธิ์บนชุกชี 3 ต้น แสดงว่าเป็นมหาโพธิ์สถานของพระพุทธชินราช
พระพุทธชินศรี และพระศรีศาสดา ทั้งสามองค์จึงเรียกว่า "โพธิ์สามเส้าสืบมา" พร้อมกัน

เนื่องจากพระพุทธชินราช มีลักษณะงดงามที่สุดในบรรดาพระพุทธรูปในประ
เทศไทย และเป็นที่เคารพสักการบูชาของประชาชนทุกชั้น พระบามสมเด็จพระจุลจอม
เกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว จึงได้โปรดให้หล่อพระพุทธชินราชจำลองขึ้นใหม่เมื่อวันที่ 20 ตุลาคม ร.ศ.120 (พ.ศ.2444) แล้วอัญเชิญไปประดิษฐาน เป็นพระประธาน ณ พระอุโบสถ วัดเบญจมบพิตร จังหวัดพระนคร (กรุงเทพฯปัจจุบัน)
