The prevalence of plagiarism has been
suggested as confirmation of this trend. However, the suggested development of better
IL skills in formative years, via school teachers, school librarians and parents, while
laudable would be very hard to achieve in the UK environment. I still believe we have a
duty to work with students in HE to improve their information literacy. Gross and
Latham (2007) also refer to research which says that the common skills-based didactic
cure for low-skilled individuals may not always be successful. This implies a search for
new ways to intervene, helping students to recognise and overcome their IL
deficiencies. Could Web 2.0 offer ways of reaching these students? I believe that many
web generation students are disadvantaged because they think they know how to find
information, but they don’t know what they don’t know
