Khon Kaen has a huge garbage problem,
with 800,000 tonnes of accumulated
rubbish awaiting disposal at dump sites in
26 districts - making it the largest
garbage dump in the Northeast,
provincial governor Kamthorn
Thavornsathit admitted on Friday.
This also makes it home to the eighth
biggest accumulation of rubbish of any
province in Thailand, said Mr Kamthorn,
citing information from the Environmental
Office Region 10.
A provincial garbage management panel
set up by the National Council for Peace
and Order (NCPO) had recently met to
discuss the growing problem of garbage
disposal in the province, said Mr
Kamthorn.
Four sub-panels were set up to solve the
problem -- looking into disposing of
accumulated rubbish in critical areas,
managing rubbish and toxic waste,
issuing regulations regarding garbage
management, and instilling a sense of
discipline in people for sustainable
management of garbage.
