Mineral nitrogen fertilizers showed a higher contribution for all
environmental impact categories than other inputs of the sunflower
cultivation system under study (Spinelli et al., 2013). Use of
urea fertilizer showed a lesser impact on the following environmental
categories: carcinogenic (40% reduction), climate change
(33% reduction), ecotoxicity (29% reduction), and minerals (39%
reduction). Use of ammonium nitrate showed limited advantages
for the environmental categories of respiratory inorganics (35%
reduction), radiation (10% reduction), acidification/eutrophication
(66% reduction), and fossil fuel consumption (5% reduction).
