Occupational skin diseases, including ACD, ICD, and urticaria, occur commonly among healthcare workers. Some of the most common allergens in the healthcare profession include biocides commonly used for applications such as the sterilization of medical devices that are sensitive to normal heat or steam sterilization processes [glutaraldehyde and ortho-phthalaldehyde (OPA)] and the disinfection of surfaces (quaternary ammonia compounds).40 Medical gloves containing certain rubber accelerators (thiuram mix and carba mix), and antibacterial hand sanitizers and soaps (chloroxylenol and cocamide diethanolamine) have also been identified as common sources of allergens.40 In general, there are increased rates of ACD for healthcare workers compared to non-healthcare workers for the majority of the above-mentioned allergens.41
