Lay and professional communities throughout the world are struggling with bioethical and legal dilemmas brought about by the proliferation of medical technology. A heightened sense of self-determination and the decision making associated with the use of available life sustaining technology, termination of life-prolonging treatment, patient-requested euthanasia, and assisted suicide have engendered bioethical and legal dilem¬mas in end-of-life care.
